  • Quinoa’s popularity owes largely to the fact that it is a complete protein that contains all 9 essential amino acids. Additionally, it is gluten-free, very high in fiber, and rich in many vitamins and minerals, such as iron and magnesium.
  • A robust grain, quinoa can stand up to warm weather—and endless parties! Delicious warm or cold, it can be used in breakfast bowls and in filling salads. Unlike lettuce-based salads that can wilt in the heat, quinoa retains its fluffy texture and intriguing flavor, whether it’s refrigerated or served at room temp.
  • Neutral when cooked, quinoa can be jazzed up any way you like. Match it to any theme—from Asian to Mexican or Mediterranean—with ingredients like sesame oil, cilantro or feta and lemon juice. Once you start experimenting, you’ll see that quinoa is a true culinary chameleon!
  • An ingredient that will help you grasp every minute of summer fun, Success® boil-in-bag tri-color quinoa is light, nutty, and ready in just 10 minutes. Prep a few bags at the beginning of the week, and you can dive into lightning-quick salads for days!

Memorable salads with quinoa depend on ingredients that are cooked correctly. Happily, learning to make perfect quinoa is as easy as following these simple steps.

  • For quinoa that is fluffy and tender but not mushy, the ideal water-to-quinoa ratio is 1 3/4:1, or 1 and 3/4 cups of water for every 1 cup of quinoa. For softer quinoa, use 2:1.
  • Quinoa is naturally covered in saponins, or compounds that help to protect plants from insects and infections. It’s best to rinse these off before cooking as they can impart a bitter taste. For best results, simply place quinoa in a mesh strainer and rinse under cool water before cooking.
  • For the best texture, always use the correct water-to-quinoa ratio and avoid overcooking your quinoa. Quinoa should be cooked in boiling water (or another liquid, such as broth, juice, coconut milk, etc.) for 15 minutes. Once cooked, remove it from the heat but keep the lid on the pot. Allow the quinoa to steam for 5 minutes before fluffing it with a fork. If there is excess liquid in the pot, strain it before serving.
  • When using quinoa for salads, allow it to cool before mixing it with other ingredients. Pre-mix your other ingredients—such as chopped vegetables, beans, cold chicken, herbs, etc.—then add the cooled quinoa to the bowl. Add the dressing just before serving.
  • No measure, no mess, Success® boil-in-bag tri-color quinoa makes light work of any recipe. Reliable and quick cooking, it can be transformed into countless quinoa salads. It can also be cooked ahead of time and stored in the fridge until you’re ready to eat.

Just like rice and couscous, quinoa is a kitchen essential that has limitless uses. Not only can it be used in dishes from breakfast until dinner, but it can also be flavored any way you like. Try it with the following types of dressing.

Appreciated for its bright tang, citrus juice is a common addition to vinaigrettes and dressings. Though lemon is the most common—often paired with Dijon, olive oil and honey—you can also try lime, orange, grapefruit or clementine juice for a different flavor profile.

Blended until silky and rich, peanut butter, soy sauce, lime juice, honey, and flavorings make a plush, Thai-style dressing for quinoa salads. Throw in plenty of crunchy vegetables—shredded cabbage, broccoli, snap peas and carrots—a sprinkling of herbs and roasted peanuts, and you have a salad that’s impressive enough for any get-together.

When you start running out of uses for all your basil, mint, parsley, and cilantro, herb dressing is the answer. Simply blitz one type of herb, or a mix, with vinegar, honey, garlic, and olive oil. Season to your liking, then toss with fluffy quinoa and a colorful blend of veggies.

A favorite combo, lemon and olive oil vinaigrettes can also be flavored in different ways. As mentioned, you can go classic, with Dijon and honey. You can also skip those ingredients, instead adding dried oregano, tahini, maple, or a blend of fresh herbs and shallots. For something a little different, you can also substitute the Dijon with honey mustard, English mustard, whole-grain, or flavored mustard.

You’ll want to dig deep into your spice cupboard when making a Southwestern-style quinoa salad! Whisk together chili powder, cumin, paprika, and a pinch of cayenne, then drizzle in apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and enough honey to balance out the flavors. Pour this delicious blend over quinoa combined with beans, corn, avocado, bell peppers and greens, and don’t forget to garnish with tortilla strips, cheese and pickled jalapeños!

Make summer last longer than ever by spending it doing what you love—not toiling over a hot stove! Dishes that are delicious eaten right away, these can also be enjoyed at the beach or at the office, on weeknights, and at potlucks and picnics. Varied and delicious, these quinoa salads are guaranteed to delight your family, friends, and guests throughout the season.

HIGH-PROTEIN CHICKEN QUINOA SALAD

We all know that quinoa is naturally high in protein. From time to time, you may want to amp up the protein in your quinoa salads even more. Here are some easy ways to do it:

  • Adding lean protein to a dish is an easy way to up the protein content of every bite. Try chicken or turkey breast, lean beef, pork, or fish. Plant-based options include tofu, tempeh, and legumes, such as chickpeas, black beans, and lentils.
  • Include healthy fats that are also sources of protein, such as nuts and nut butters, eggs, and fatty fish, such as salmon and sardines. Full-fat dairy ingredients, like Greek yogurt and cottage cheese, are also great options.
  • To keep things from feeling tired, remember to include tasty garnishes, dressing, and fresh herbs. Nothing livens up a quinoa salad like a mix of crunchy, creamy, sweet, and savory add-ins, from roasted nuts, seeds, and cheese to dried fruit, herbs, or croutons. Some, like nuts and cheese, will also increase the salad’s protein.
  • Ensure you always have high-protein ingredients on hand—such as leftover rotisserie chicken, cooked Success® boil-in-bag tri-color quinoa, nuts, cheese and more—and you’ll never struggle to prep protein-rich meals. This type of ingredient can help with meal prep and meal planning every day of the week.

The world is overflowing with delicious quinoa salads to try! Enjoy every single one by avoiding these common quinoa-cooking mistakes:

  • Got a less-than-stellar quinoa salad on your hands? It’s likely caused by mushy quinoa. An ingredient that invariably leads to mediocre results, it’s easily avoided by sticking to the correct water-to-quinoa ratio and cooking the quinoa correctly.
  • As with any salad, it’s best to err on the side of too little dressing rather than too much. To get the balance just right, start off by stirring in half of your dressing. Taste the dish, then add more dressing little by little, if needed.
  • Seasoning at every step—from salting the cooking water to adding salt and pepper to your dressing—is key to a well-seasoned quinoa salad.
  • Always leave quinoa to steam, off the heat, after it cooks. This allows it to absorb excess moisture and fluff up. Once it’s ready, you should then let it cool completely before using it in a salad. Most salad ingredients will wilt or get soggy if mixed with warm quinoa.
  • When choosing your quinoa salad recipe, avoid ones with too many wet ingredients. Before assembling, make sure to dry washed lettuce leaves and to drain quinoa if there is any moisture still in the pot.
  • Choose salad garnishes that will add flavor as well as texture. You want contrast in every bite, so opt for ingredients that cover every consistency—from creamy to crunchy!

Make this the summer of quinoa salads with Success® boil-in-bag tri-color quinoa! A delicious addition to every warm-weather plan, it guarantees a season of satisfied diners.
