New Orleans Gumbo

This Shrimp and Chorizo New Orleans-inspired gumbo is packed with Cajun flavors that will spice up weeknight dinnertime. Serve with Success® White Rice.

  • 2 bags Success® White Rice
  • 2 Tbsp canola oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 Tbsp Cajun seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 4 oz sliced cooked chorizo sausage
  • 6 oz shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails removed
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley


  • Step 1

  • Prepare white rice according to package directions.

    Step 2

  • Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet set over medium heat; cook onion, garlic, and green pepper for 3 to 5 minutes or until slightly softened. Stir in Cajun seasoning, salt and pepper; cook for 1 minute.

    Step 3

  • Stir in butter; cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until melted. Whisk in flour; cook for 1 minute. Add broth; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, whisking occasionally, for 5 to 8 minutes or until gumbo is slightly thickened.

    Step 4

  • Stir in sausage; cook for 5 minutes. Stir in shrimp; cook for about 1 minute or until pink and curled. Stir in parsley; serve over cooked rice.

    Recipe Tip

    For authentic Cajun flavor, look for andouille sausage at the supermarket.
